Spring 2009 Semester of Service Spring was in the air and that meant one thing, SAL members all over the country were busy participating in local and national service projects.
National Projects
Local Projects
Our SAL members are volunteering on a variety of local projects as well. Among them are collecting children’s books for schools; canned food and blanket drives; helping cook, serve and clean up at Senior Centers, Soup Kitchens, Homeless Shelters, and Ronald McDonald House; beach, campus and road clean- ups; making cards for seniors, military personnel and hospitalized children; Helping at fundraisers for local hospitals and shelters; filling backpacks with food for children to eat on weekends and many more.
National Day of Service and Global Youth Service Day
Enacted by Congress in 1994, National Day of Service was another way to honor Dr. King’s belief in how service can strengthen communities. Over 13,000 projects took place this year. According to MLKDay.gov, “this more than doubled last year’s record of 5,000 projects.”
Global Youth Service Day takes place during one weekend in April, in over 100 countries. Over the past 21 years, millions have already participated in this annual event including– Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapters.
SAL's 2009 Spring Semester of Service
During this current academic year, Sigma Alpha Lambda chapters have completed over 350 initiatives engaging over 4000 members in reaching out to their campuses and communities. The "Spring Semester of Service" is a strategy to help young people find their voice, take action and have impact on the most critical problems facing the world. These issues include literacy, climate change, hunger, disaster and homelessness among many others. This year’s Spring Semester of Service kicked off on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 19, with National Day of Service and will end with Global Youth Service Day, April 24-26.
