Sigma Alpha Lambda, as a National Partner of Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) will be assisting with local chapter projects scheduled throughout the winter/spring terms and will be designed to provide maximum flexibility to members wanting to participate. 

Global Youth Service Day supports youth on a life-long path of service and civic engagements. A strong youth service movement creates healthy communities and fosters citizenship, knowledge, and the personal development of young adults and children. It also educates the public, the media, and elected officials about the role of youth as community leaders.

Getting involved is easy! There are dozens of opportunities for your chapter to help serve your local community:

• Help the hungry or the homeless – cook meals, collect clothes or canned food, help the local food bank, harvest a garden.
• Senior Citizens – adopt a “grandfriend,” visit a nursing home, deliver meals, teach a senior citizen computer skills.
• School Activities – Enhance drug awareness or bike safety, tutor a student, paint a mural over graffiti.
• Neighborhood Enhancement – Help neighbors with repairs, plant flowers in public areas, clean a vacant lot or local park.
• Special Needs – Volunteer at a Special Olympics event, raise money for large print books, read to visually impaired people, bring toys to a cancer ward.
• Politics and Government – Help promote new voter registration, volunteer at a poling booth, pass out election material, organize a public issues forum for your neighborhood.
• Environment – Clean up trash along a river, create a habitat for wildlife, campaign to encourage walking or biking, set up a recycling pick-up.
