Montclair State University Chapter Activities
Campus Clean Up with CUMAC/ECHO We walked around campus picking up as much litter as we could find. We also held a food drive for a local food bank.
Chapter Meeting
This was our first meeting of the year. We provided pizza, snacks and drinks for our members and they shared lots of ideas for things that we can do this semester.
Community ServiceWe helped construct a house with Habitat for Humanity for underprivileged families in Newark, New Jersey.
Toy/Blanket Drive SAL members collected new toys and blankets for children undergoing chemotherapy at Hackensack University Hospital. We received 40 new items, which we delivered to the hospital. We also received 147 used items, which we donated to the Salvation Army.
Kick-off Meeting/Social We held a social at a local eatery and we discussed fundraising and community service ideas. We had members volunteer for Secretary, Community Service Chair, and Fundraising Chair. We decided to do Habitat for Humanity next semester and we decided to organize a party to raise money for the chapter and a philanthropy. We also decided to have a Toys for Tots drive for Christmas.
Breast Cancer Walk We volunteered for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Jersey City, NJ. We were stationed at the food services tent and helped serve food and water to registered walkers and volunteers.
Hillside Food Bank Five SAL members volunteered in various departments of the food bank. Those who participated found it very rewarding.
Food Bank We set up a couple of sessions for members to help out at the New Jersey Food Bank. We prepared items with the help of workers for a food bank.
Toys for Tots Collection Boxes were wrapped in wrapping paper and put in several locations on campus. Signs and fliers were posted in several locations to encourage students and faculty to donate toys to their cause. 100 toys were collected and were taken to the Marine Corps base by one of their members.
BBBS Volunteers for Group Mentoring Program Lavar Jones from BBBS was scheduled to come speak to the chapter about the group mentoring program. Mr. Jones had to cancel at the last minute and was unable to speak to the chapter. Instead, an email was sent to all members of the Montclair chapter about the Group Mentoring program and interested volunteers were to contact Mr. Jones directly.
